Anglers Brave the Weather to Support Young People
The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation
On Saturday 6th June 2026, members of Wimborne and District Angling Club gathered at the picturesque setting of Winterbourne Zelston for a special charity fishing day. The event, organised largely by member Paul Hooker in support of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation The charity was established following the the death of Lt John Thornton RM who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008 at the age of 22. The eventbrought together a small but dedicated group of anglers, all united by a shared passion for fishing and a commitment to raising funds for an important cause.
Despite challenging weather conditions throughout the day, the spirit among participants remained high. Ten anglers took part in the friendly competition, each determined to make the most of the occasion while contributing to the fundraising effort. From the outset, there was a strong sense of camaraderie, with anglers supporting one another and enjoying the opportunity to spend time outdoors in good company.
Testing Conditions but High Spirits
The weather proved to be a significant factor, with intermittent rain and blustery winds making conditions far from ideal. However, such challenges are often part and parcel of angling, and those in attendance embraced the situation with resilience and good humour. Waterproofs were donned, umbrellas deployed, and hot drinks shared as the anglers settled into their chosen swims.
Far from dampening enthusiasm, the conditions seemed to enhance the sense of achievement when fish were landed. Each catch was met with encouragement and admiration from fellow competitors, reinforcing the friendly and inclusive nature of the day.
Impressive Catches and Memorable Moments
Several notable fish were landed, providing memorable highlights and plenty of conversation among the group.
Anglers demonstrated patience and expertise, adapting their techniques to suit the conditions. Whether targeting larger specimens or simply enjoying the steady rhythm of the sport, each participant contributed to the overall success of the day. The weigh-in at the end of the session revealed a commendable collective catch, reflecting both determination and ability.
While the competitive element added an extra layer of interest, the emphasis remained firmly on enjoyment and fundraising rather than rivalry. The results were celebrated in good spirit, with all participants acknowledging the efforts of their fellow anglers.

Pete and Linda Thornton BEM
At the heart of the event was its charitable purpose, and it was such a thrill to have John’s parents Pete and Linda Thornton (BEM) there to cheer everyone on and provide the best Dorset Apple Cake this reporter has ever tasted. The generosity shown by those involved, whether through entry fees, donations, or contributions on the day, ensured that the event made a meaningful impact.
The choice of charity resonated strongly with those present, adding a deeper sense of purpose to the proceedings. It served as a reminder that events such as this can bring communities together not only for recreation but also for the benefit of others.
A Successful and Enjoyable Event
As the day drew to a close, it was clear that the charity fishing day had been a success on multiple levels. Despite the less-than-ideal weather, all ten anglers reported having thoroughly enjoyed their time on the bank. The combination of good fishing, friendly competition, and a worthwhile cause created a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
The event highlighted the strength of the angling community within Wimborne and District Angling Club. It demonstrated how shared interests can be harnessed to support charitable initiatives while fostering friendship and enjoyment.
Looking Ahead
Following the success of this year’s event, there is every reason to believe that similar charity days will continue to be a feature of the club’s calendar. The positive feedback from participants and the funds raised for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation provide a strong foundation for future events.
In conclusion, the charity fishing day at Winterbourne Zelston on 6th June 2026 was a testament to the enduring appeal of angling and the generosity of those who take part in it. Through perseverance in challenging conditions and a collective commitment to a worthy cause, the anglers ensured that the day was both enjoyable and impactful.
