Dear Game Section members,

May 2026 will long be remembered as a truly extraordinary month. On 25 May, Kew Gardens provisionally recorded 34.8°C — the hottest May day in UK history, exceeding the previous record by a full two degrees Celsius.

Dear Spring fishers!

This month we have been busy with building the new hut at WZ, collecting large amounts of weed, repairing seats around our lakes and welcoming the return of swallows. So lets all enjoy the spring sunshine while it lasts!

This month we are finally returning to something approaching normality. Water levels are at last receding, and it’s been a productive few weeks, with plenty of work carried out tidying the margins and introducing fresh stock across all our lakes.

Weather and Lake Closure Update

The past month has been a challenging one for the club with persistent rain across Dorset. As many of you will have seen, water levels across local rivers, fields, and roads have been consistently high. Unfortunately, these conditions have had a direct impact on our lake at Winterborne Zelston.

This month the weather has played havoc with our fishing. Storm Chandra has brought heavy rain and a saturated ground that has led to widespread flooding throughout the area. This unsettled pattern is likely to continue with occasional rain and showers throughout the coming week.

Whilst the latest fish stock sizes are smaller, they are in good condition and perfectly capable of bending the rod. I expect that by the end of February we will be back to normal. The problem has been that all the local fish farms have not been able to supply fish of any decent size..

As many of you are asking about Winterbourne Zelston, I thought I would show you its current position in the photo below. The levels are still very low and unfortunately we will have to wait a while as the aquifers fill after much needed rain. Local opinion is that this will not be until mid-December.t impact on our lake at Winterborne Zelston.

Throughout August, we have all been feeling the effects of record temperatures. Our lakes and rivers have been running at low levels, and the sustained heat has made conditions particularly challenging.
